WHEEL,ABRASIVE

A rigid piece of abrasive with or without mounting facilities. Items having such mounting facilities as a fixed spindle, a threaded insert, or an arbor hole are designed for mounting on a grinding machine, tool chuck or mandrel. Items without mounting facilities are designed to be secured in a wheel holder by means of spring clamps.

VISE,BENCH AND MACHINE TABLE

A clamping device consisting of a base and two jaws mounted on a subbase. The subbase is designed for mounting on a workbench and is not normally mounted on a machine table. The base and jaw assembly may be readily detached from the subbase for use on a drilling machine, milling machine, grinding machine and the like.

CLAMP,PARALLEL,MACHINIST'S

V-BLOCK

A fixture of cast iron or steel, precision ground, having one or more V grooves machined parallel and squared with respect to the bottom, top, and ends. The block may have milled grooves on the sides to accommodate clamps which are used for holding cylindrical work.

V-BLOCK SET,MATCHED

A set of two or more matched V-blocks.

VISE,MACHINE TABLE

A clamping device consisting of a base and two jaws for use on a drilling machine, milling machine, grinding machine and the like. The base may be of stationary type or may be designed for angular adjustment. It may be bolt, screw, or strap clamp mounted or flat surface for resting upon the machine table. Excludes VISE, BENCH AND MACHINE TABLE.

ARBOR,SHELL REAMER

A bar of special steel, machined and ground, having a Morse taper or a straight shank. The body end is tapered for mounting the cutter, which also has a taper slightly smaller to assure a tight fit. It is used on drilling and milling machines for holding shell reamers.

JACK,BRACING

A device consisting of a bracing or lifting screw with nut, and a base V-shaped and slotted which permits bracing at various angles to a machine table by blocking or straddling the corners of angle plates or parallels. It is used for supporting or bracing work to be machined.

JACK,PLANER

A device consisting of a bracing or lifting screw having a self-aligning swivel head and a flat base. The body is threaded and partially slotted for a locking bolt which clamps the bracing screw in any position. It is used for leveling work on machine tools, layout and inspection tables.

JACK,VERTICAL

A device consisting of a bracing or lifting screw with nut and a flat base. Neither base nor screw revolve, the adjustment for height being made by turning the nut. It is used for leveling work on machine tools, layout and inspection tables.

BENCH CENTERS

A precision tool consisting of a base or bed with two heads fitted with hardened centers. One or both heads are adjustable on bed and locked in place by lever operated clamp gibs. It is used for inspecting and checking parts between centers.

ARBOR,WHEEL,GRINDING-BUFFING-WIRE BRUSH

A bar of steel, machined or ground, with flange(s) and/or steel nut or machine screw. Used with drill chucks, lathe chucks, machine shafts and the like for mounting abrasive wheels, buffing wheels and wire wheels. See also ADAPTER, SPINDLE, PORTABLE SANDER.

PLATE,DUPLEX,SURFACE AND LAPPING

A cast iron item with two working surfaces, one of which is smooth (not grooved) and suitable for use either as a PLATE, SURFACE or for lapping, and the other surface grooved for lapping only.

HOLDER,DRILL

A tool accessory used to hold a drill while drilling with a lathe. Excludes CHUCK, DRILL.

SOCKET,STRAIGHT SHANK TOOL

A machine socket adapter for extending the length of tool sockets and/or for converting the size of sockets to size of straight tool shanks.

CHUCK,DRILL

An accessory for holding tools with a plain cylindrical shank such as drills, taps, or the like, by means of two or more internal selfcentering (universal) jaws. It may be attached directly to the spindle of a machine, arbor, shaft, hand mechanism, or the like without the use of centers. The jaws are simultaneously adjusted by an adjusting nut, sleeve, feed screw, or the like. The maximum rated capacity of this item is one (1) inch (25.4 mm) diameter. COLLET,MACHINE

A work holding device consisting of a longitudinally slotted sleeve which has a tapering or conical end designed to fit into a corresponding taper of a chuck so that the lengthwise movement of the sleeve causes a contraction or expansion of the gripping surfaces. The gripping or holding tension is actuated by a backward pull (draw in) or by a forward push (force in). Used on lathes, milling machines, screw machines and the like. Excludes SOCKET, STRAIGHT SHANK TOOL and SOCKET, TAPER SHANK TOOL.

A machine tool accessory used as a clamp for gripping a piece of work and conveying motion to it from the face plate.

CHUCK,INDEPENDENT JAW

An accessory used for holding objects directly to the spindle of a machine, arbor, shaft or the like without the use of centers. Two or more jaws are adjusted separately, each by its own adjusting screw, to facilitate holding objects of irregular shape.

CHUCK,INDEPENDENT-UNIVERSAL JAW

An accessory used for holding objects directly to the spindle of a machine, arbor, shaft, or the like, without the use of centers. It employs two or more jaws which may be separately adjusted, each by its own adjusting screw, and may also be simultaneously adjusted by gearing common to all jaws.

CHUCK,UNIVERSAL JAW

An accessory used for holding objects directly to the spindle of a machine, arbor, shaft, or the like, without the use of centers. Two or more self-centering jaws are adjusted simultaneously, usually by rotation of a scroll gear which engages slots or teeth in the back of the jaws. Maximum rated capacity is in excess of one (1) inch (25.4 mm) diameter. For universal chucks having a maximum capacity of one (1) inch (25.4 mm) or less, see CHUCK, DRILL. CHUCK,MAGNETIC

A device for holding ferrous items without the use of centers, jaws, clamps and the like. Used to prevent distortion of the items being held or to prevent interference with tools in a machining or hand finishing operation. Holding power is accomplished through magnetic force applied through a permanent magnet or an electromagnet, either of which may be provided with an off-on control.

HOLDER,CUTTING TOOL

An accessory designed to hold and support cutter bits or sleeve type boring bars of various types and sizes. It is used on lathes, automatic machines, planers, and shapers. Excludes items such as tool posts.

BAR,BORING TOOL

ARBOR,FLY CUTTER

A bar of special steel, machined and ground, having a standard milling machine or Brown and Sharpe taper shank. A square hole with set screws for holding the cutting tool is provided in the body end. It is used with a tool bit ground to an appropriate form for cutting cylindrical holes.

MANDREL,MACHINE,SOLID

A cylindrical-shaped tool with a slight taper on the over-all length, centered on each end with a flat milled on the ends for a holder. It is used for holding work for machining operations on lathes and milling machines.

GRINDING MACHINE,MACHINE TOOL ATTACHMENT

A motor driven device consisting of an abrasive wheel attached either directly to the motor shaft or to a spindle unit which is driven by a belt and an electric motor. May be used on lathes, milling machines, boring mills, shapers and slotters for grinding surface plates, rolls, journals, lathe centers, internal bores, external surfaces, or the like.

MANDREL,EXPANSION

A holding tool, tapered on the over-all length and centered on both ends with a flat milled or ground on one end for aholder which, together with a flexible sleeve, is forcibly inserted into the work to support it for machining operations on lathes or milling machines.

ARBOR,MILLING CUTTER

A bar of special steel, machined and ground, having a standard milling machine, Morse or Brown and Sharpe taper shank and furnished with or without bearing sleeves. It is used for mounting plain hole milling cutters of various types and sizes.

HOLDER,COUNTERBORE

A cylindrical body having a straight or tapered shank which holds the cutter in place by driving lugs or two splines 180 degrees (3.1 radians) apart. It is used extensively on screw machines and boring mills. Excludes HOLDER, COUNTERSINK.

HOLDER,COUNTERSINK

A cylindrical shaped device specifically designed to hold and position, as well as to control the cutting depth of a COUNTERSINK. The holder may have a micrometer stop adjustment or a plain sleeve with nut adjustment. Countersink cutters accommodated by this holder are of a specific design. Excludes HOLDER, COUNTERBORE.

ADAPTER,SPINDLE END,MILLING MACHINE

An adapter designed to fit into the end of a milling machine spindle and accommodate various cutting tool holders and/or end milling cutters having shanks of different types and sizes. See also ARBOR (as modified).

ARBOR,HOLE SAW

ARBOR,SHELL END MILL

A bar of special steel, machined and ground, having a standard milling machine or a Brown and Sharpe tapered shank. The body ends are ground to various diameters for mounting the different sizes of shell and mill cutters. It is used with adapters on milling machines having standardized spindle end and Brown and Sharpe milling machines having taper-nose or threaded spindles.

TESTER,CENTER

An instrument used in adjusting and locating centrally any point or hole in a piece of work operated upon in a lathe chuck or faceplate. It consists of a holder with a universal ball socket for holding an indicating rod or "wiggler".

NIB,DIAMOND,WHEEL DRESSING

An item consisting of an industrial diamond mounted in the end of a metal rod or bar and exposed to provide a cutting point or edge. It is used for truing, shaping, and dressing abrasive wheels. When in use, it is mounted in a suitable holder on a stand or machine and its movement across the wheel surface may be either manual or machine powered.

HEAD,FACING,AUTOMATIC FEED

A circular shaped attachment with a radial guide or ways into which a tool-carrying slide is fitted. The slide is provided with a continuous automatic feed for feeding the tool post toward or away from the center. It is designed for mounting on a bar and is used on a lathe, drilling and/or milling machine.

DRIVING MECHANISM,ELECTRIC,DRIVE HEAD

A device, consisting of a specially designed electric motor, which may be reversible, mounted in a housing, which also incloses a transmission gearing, communicating with a driving shaft extending to the operating end of the shaft housing, the whole mechanism being independently self-contained for ready portability. It is used to increase production on hand threading and cutting tools, and other manually operated mechanisms.

STONE AND HOLDER,CYLINDER HONE

A mounted length of abrasive or combination of abrasive and cork. The stone is integral with the mount for use in conjunction with a cylinder honing tool.

STAND,ABRASIVE WHEEL DRESSER

A device consisting of a cast steel base, a mandrel upon which the abrasive wheel can be mounted for revolving, and a diamond dressing nib. The diamond nib is mounted on a mechanical arm which is adjustable to the specific angle that wheel is to be trued or shaped. This arm is moved in a reciprocating motion causing the diamond to pass over the face of the revolving wheel thus performing the truing, shaping and dressing operation.

GRINDER ATTACHMENT,DRILL

A mechanical item designed to be attached to a grinder for the purpose of holding various types of drills at the proper angle for sharpening the cutting end.

A chucklike device designed to hold, by means of a collet, various kinds of round work while performing machine or drill operations. A disk shaped unit having a fill section of wire material extending from the perimeter of the disk perpendicular to the axis of the hub. A group of two more mandrels with honing stones for use with a honing machine for removing stock from the internal cylindrical surfaces of items, such as bushings in connecting rods, pistons, spindle bodies, steering gear housings, and the like. It may or may not include truing sleeves.

PLATE,LAPPING

A round, rectangular, or square-shaped item manufactured from various metals. By comparison, its thickness is less than its length, width, or diameter. The lap (abrading surface) has narrow V-shaped or straight-sided grooves to facilitate abrading. Used to produce a geometrically flat or smooth surface by abrasion. Excludes BLOCK, LAPPING. BLOCK,LAPPING

ARBOR,ABRASIVE SHEET ELEMENT

A specific bar of special steel, machined and ground, consisting of a plain cylindrical shank at one end, and the other end vertically slotted for the insertion of abrasive sheet elements. In use it is rotated by the chuck of a drill press, lathe, flexible shaft machine, or pneumatic or electric drill for the internal deburring, cleaning, polishing or finishing of a cylindrical hole.

CHUCK,QUICK CHANGE

An item used to hold tools, such as drills, reamers, and the like without the use of jaws. It employs a sliding collar mechanism which engages a removable adapter to facilitate installation or removal of the tool.

ADAPTER,QUICK CHANGE CHUCK

A cylindrical shaped item designed to hold various cutting tools and to simplify their installation in or removal from a quick change type chuck.

COUNTERBALANCE,PORTABLE POWER TOOL

A device consisting of an adjustable spring actuated drum or reel and a wire cable having a lifting eye or hook on one end. It is designed for aerial suspension over the work bench, assembly line or the like in holding tools in counterbalanced suspension.

BRUSH,FIBER,ROTARY WHEEL

A disk shaped unit having a fill section of vegetable fiber, synthetic filament, horsehair, or animal bristle material extending from the perimeter of the disk perpendicular to the axis of the hub. VISE,CONTOUR GRIPPING

A clamping device consisting of a base with one stationary and one manual screw actuated jaw. Each jaw has either a series of independently sliding gripping fingers (finger type) encased in a housing, or a group of adjustable gripping cams (cam type) attached to the top. The gripping surfaces of either type may be locked in a position to grip securely irregularly shaped objects of square, round, or tapered shapes, and the like. It is designed to be mounted on a machine table.

INDEXING FIXTURE

An item designed to accurately select any degree of angle for milling, grinding, drilling, or boring operations. It is not furnished with a work-holding device such as a chuck or vise. It may be furnished with centers. It may be of the automatic angle selector type, manual (perforated disk) angle selector type, or optical system positioning type. It may consist of two units (a head and a tail-stock). Excludes HOLDING FIXTURE, COLLET CHUCKING, MACHINE.

MILLING-GRINDING-DRILLING-SLOTTING ATTACHMENT

A motor driven unit for milling, grinding, drilling, boring, slotting, gear cutting, thread milling, keyseating and external and internal grinding operations. It is adapted for mounting on a lathe, planer, shaper and/or boring mill. May also be used as a portable self-contained unit suitable for mounting on the item being worked, or bench mounting when provided with a feed table.

PAD,POLISHING AND RUBBING

A flat, circular disk of flexible or semiflexible fabric designed for attachment to a backing pad or polishing holder of a power driven polisher or disk buffer, used for polishing and rubbing. Excludes WHEEL, BUFFING.

VISE-CLAMP,TOOLMAKER'S

A viselike clamp with one movable and one stationary jaw. The jaw width must not exceed 2 inches (50.8 millimeters) over-all. It is furnished with a block to shorten the jaw opening span. It may be V-grooved on the under-side and may contain a hole(s) through the block for fastening to a bench.

CHUCK,CENTERING,LATHE

An item designed for centering and supporting round work without centers, such as centerless armature shafts and the like, in the tailstock of small engine lathes by means of three or more self-centering brass or bronze jaws, or an adjustable collet type brass or bronze bushing. The jaws or bushing may be adjusted for either running fit or driving fit on the round work. It is attached to the lathe by means of a tapered shank. Excludes CHUCK, DRILL and CHUCK, UNIVERSAL JAW.

PLATE,INDEXING FIXTURE

A disk shaped item containing equally spaced holes around the face. It is used on an INDEXING FIXTURE to divide a 360 degree rotation of work into equal arcs.

SLEEVE,EXPANSION MANDREL

A cylindrical spring type metal expansion sleeve which is a component of a MANDREL, EXPANSION.

ADAPTER,JEWELER'S LATHE TOOL POST

A single piece adapter of square or rectangular cross-sectional shape, cylindrically bored, and slotted so as to be compressible, to be used when a tool post of a jeweler's lathe, which is designed to hold square or rectangular cutting tools, must be adapted to hold a round cutting tool.

A device designed to fit into the end of a spindle from metalworking machinery. It aligns the machine spindle with datum face of a workpiece.
